ISLAND COUNTY IS A VOTE BY MAIL COUNTY

All active registered voters will automatically be mailed a ballot approximately 3 weeks prior to each election.  If you do not receive your ballot or if you have changed your address, please contact the Auditor's Office by phone (360-679-7366), by mail, by e-mail or in person at the Island County Auditor's Office.

ATTENTION VOTERS:

The next election in Island County is the General Election on November 3, 2009.  General Election Ballots will be mailed to voters approximately 3 weeks before the election and must be postmarked for return or delivered no later than 8:00 pm November 3, 2009.  To ensure your vote counts follow these instructions:

  • Mark your selections on your ballot.
  • Insert your marked ballot in the pink security envelope and seal.
  • Place the pink envelope with your ballot inside into the blue mailing envelope.
  • Sign and date mailing envelope; moisten and seal envelope – Do not use tape.
  • Ensure your ballot envelope is postmarked or delivered to the County Elections Office on or before Election Day.

Again: Remember your ballot envelope must be signed and postmarked or delivered to the County Election Office, the Camano Annex on or before Election Day; or a Regional Ballot Drop Off Center on Election Day.  Address of Locations below.

To return your ballots:

Before Election Day: Ballots may be mailed at any time up until the election or voters may drop off their ballots at the following locations between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays):
  • Island County Elections Office - 400 N. Main Street in Coupeville
  • Camano Island Annex - 121 N. East Camano Drive in Camano Island
On Election Day: On Election Day, ballots may still be mailed, if they will carry a postmark matching the day of the election.   Please be sure to check with your local Post Office to verify their last pick up of the day. Voters may also drop off their ballots at our Regional Ballot Drop Off Centers, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the following locations:
  • Island County Elections Office - 400 N. MainStreet in Coupeville
  • Camano Island Annex - 121 N. East Camano Drive in Camano Island
  • Oak Harbor School District Administration Building - 350 S. Oak Harbor Street in Oak Harbor
  • Trinity Lutheran Church - 18341 SR 525 in Freeland

Filing for Office:

Information about filing for office can be found in Title 29A of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 29A):

"Procedures for Filing for Elective Office in Washington State" is available from the Office of the Secretary of State, 520 Union Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98504-0220.

Declaration & Affidavit of Candidacy:

Almost all candidates are required to submit a "Declaration and Affidavit of Candidacy" when filing for public office. This form is printed by the Public Disclosure Commission, which distributes it directly and through the Secretary of State's office and the County Auditor's office.

Candidates for Precinct Committee Officer file a different form, available from the County Auditor's Office.

In Island County, candidates for the state legislature must file with the Secretary of State in Olympia because the 10th Legislative District encompasses parts of Skagit and Snohomish Counties, as well as all of Island County.

All federal and statewide elective office candidates must file with the Secretary of State's office in Olympia.

Candidates filing for any of the above mentioned Offices may file on-line with the Secretary of State.

All countywide elective office candidates in Island County must file with the Island County Auditor.

Most offices require a filing fee. The law has provision for indigent candidates. (RCW 29A.24.091)

There are time limits for the decision to withdraw a declaration of candidacy. (RCW 29A.24.131)

Write-in candidates may file a Declaration of Write-in Candidacy. This must be filed no later than the day before the election or primary. A write-in candidate need not file a declaration, but there are differences in the required ballot markings. These are explained in RCW 29A.24.311 and RCW 29A.24.320.

Please note:  When you move from one county into another, you will need to complete a new registration form.  They are available at local libraries and government offices, or online at www.vote.wa.gov
